A persuasive effort by the unions representing workers has brought about a new and more suitable Pension Scheme for National Water Commission Workers. The unions had also gained for the current workers who join the scheme the right to elect to lump sum payments in excess of the amount general allowed. Although it is perceive that benefits under the new scheme were for the most part better than the old, workers also have the option to choose to either join the new scheme or remain on the old. Workers are urge that it is an individual decision they have to take, after weighing the 'pros' and 'cons' of each scheme. In light of the far-reaching effect of such a decision, the unions had secured an additional three (3) months period to the end of March 2002 for members to take a decision. Those who joined the scheme between January and March would enjoy the same entitlement but would be required to pay retroactive premiums. .
